Execution Class

What is an Execution Class?

There are four defined execution classes for steel, each with their own set of requirements that gets more complex as the number increases. Execution classes are decided by the engineering effort put in to fulfil the project's specific design parameters.

Please note: The information provided below is for guidance only. Please consult an engineer if you are unsure which execution class would be suitable for your project.

Execution Class 1

EXC 1 is made up of steel structural components up to strength class S275 and aluminium structural components. Buildings up to 2 floors, or a 4-floor detached building, stair railings in residential buildings and agricultural buildings are covered by this class.

Execution Class 2

This is the most common execution class and consists of all supporting structures made of steel up to strength class S700 and aluminium structural components. It is generally used for buildings between 2 and 15 floors.

Execution Class 3

EXC 3 is for steel supporting structures up to S700 and aluminium structural components. This might include bridges, crane tracks and buildings with more than 15 floors.

Execution Class 4

EXC 4 is for all structural components that could be extremely harmful for people or the environment if they were to collapse, i.e. bridges over densely populated areas or hazardous industrial plants.

What are Execution Classes Used For?

Execution classes are used to divide the fabrication industry into four categories which limit what steelwork contractors are allowed to fabricate. For example, an EXC 2 steelwork company could only fabricate EXC 1 and EXC 2 structures. This also allows clients to easily find contractors who are qualified to construct buildings to the required standards and assurance controls.
